Creating a Romantic Sanctuary

My wife and I were talking about slowly redecorating our bedroom to make it more romantic. It's difficult where we live now because half of our bedroom is filled with musical instruments and another corner is filled with Creative Memories stuff. When we get a bigger house, getting these things into another room will help. We're not really sure what we want. We both like deep red's and think that it is a romantic color. I like some of the Pre-Raphaelite paintings by Dickee, Waterhouse, or Leighton. I think they are romantic. But, I'm not sure how to base an entire bedroom around a painting...or a color. Here's an example of one of the paintings.
I'm curious what other people would do with a painting like this and an affinity toward deep red colors. What items would you think would look good and yet add to a romantic atmosphere? Just curious...

With that painting, I would have cream walls and a moss accent wall, and have cream and gold bedding with deep red accents-- pillows, other artwork, ceramics, etc.

That era depicted in the picture makes me think of luxurious fabrics. I'm thinking burgandy & rich chocolate brown colors with accents in cream to lighten it up. But ask me again tomorrow, my decorating ideas usually depend on what mood I'm in. :)

I agree with Theresa. Deep reds, Moss or darker greens and golds as accents with cream colors on the walls or at least half of the wall. Take the background accent colors from that painting itself. Maybe a bed cover in a damask pattern in the accent colors. There was a movie with Daniel Day-Lweis and Wynonna Ryder about late 1800's New York society called "The Age of Innocence". Watch this movie to see the sort of design ideas from the romance period. Great set designs. Very romantic and stately.

I forgot to mention in my post that we live in a rental and painting the walls is not an option at this point. So, we pretty much have to work with plain white walls.

Well, there's white in that painting, too, though you could hand moss green velvet fabric behind the bed (like curtains, with or without a window.)

My decorating tastes don't really flow with the picture so I will stay off of that type of suggestion BUT I would recomend incorporating any speacial things you have from your honeymoon. Todd and I went to Catalina and our bed & master bath have a beachy theme to it as we tried to mimic the condo we stayed at. We also put out all of the pretty trinkets we bought and decorated around that.
