American Idol: Casey
My family enjoys watching American Idol. As a musician/singer, I like to make my own judgements after a singer performs. In fact, since we have DVR, we pause the show after a performance and make our own comments/judgements before we hear what the judges actually have to say. Usually at least one of the judges expresses our similar opinion. Last night, one of my favorite performers on this years show was in danger of going home. Casey Abrams is a very talented singer and musician. When we saw him show up to auditions with his melodica, I thought "Oh no...this guys not gonna be good." And then he opened his mouth and blew my entire family away. Amazing, unique singer! For some weird reason, America put him in the bottom three and saved some bland, cookie cutter singers like Thia and Halley. Don't get me wrong, they are good singers...but there is nothing memorable about them. Anyway, when they revealed that Casey was the one in danger of going home the collective scream of "Nooooooooooo!" echoed through our home. Luckily, the judges didn't even let him finish his swan-song and used their one "Save" of the season to keep him on the show. Thank goodness! My wife and I have never actually voted, but we might start voting next week to keep talented and unique people like Casey on the show. America...what were you thinking? Seriously? Why are less talented singers like Naima still on the show? Why are very talented musicians and singers who are unique and amazing, like Casey, almost eliminated? I seriously contemplated not watching the show at all if Casey did, in fact, get eliminated. It would prove to me that American has little interest in talent and uniqueness and are more interested in another cookie cutter singer who sounds like everyone else. Thankfully, Casey was saved and I will be watching the show for another week.

I was so bummed. No, not just bummed, I was ANGRY!
Neither Casey or James should ever have to go to the bottom three. I find Casey fascinating in that he is so good musically and yet has an every man kind of look. This proves once again that most of America is only out to vote for "looks".
I too had decided never to watch again, but now that he is saved, not only will I watch, but both Ray and I will be voting every week.
Sadly, Ray has been voting all along for Haley, who I think looks "pained" when she sings. They are all great singers, but Casey and James stand out to me as exceptional.
I think America has become a shallow society trying to be too much like Charlie Sheen, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and every other cookie cutter celeb.
Wake up America. There are more of "us" out there than there are "them". Stand up and be recognized for who you are.. uniquely and wonderfully made and stop paying to be entertained by shallow posers.

I agree with you and your mom. Casey is a very talented guy and shouldn't of been in the bottom 3 this week. i think his going on first hurt him and he probebly got missed by some people. My favorite is James (he rocked the heck out of Judas Priest) and the little country guy BUT I think Casey and Pia are very talented and it would have been a darn shame to see him go home and keep some of the other girls who offer nothing new.
James is my second favorite behind Casey. He definitely has a great voice and an awesome back-story. I like Pia as a singer, but think she's fairly Celine Dion-ish. I love Scotty's deep voice, but don't really care much for country music as a whole. But, he's got a great personality. I'd love it to be a James and Casey show-down in the final show.
I agree with you about Pia, she is not my cup of tea but she really is a great singer. I can see how the country kid would not appeal to you because he is sooooo country. He souldn't sing anything else but country but that is ok with me. I am a confused soul, I listen to everything but rap, techno and hip hop except for the Beastie Boys, I love them and they are rap. It will be an interesting season, at least they are all talented. Sometimes I wounder where they found a few of them.
I've said it before in the past and I'll say it again. America has nothing to do with who stays and who goes home. It's all about ratings. I haven't watched this season but from what it looks like, Casey is the favorite. Due to this, putting him in the bottom three really shocked a lot of people. Enough to make people talk about it and blog about it and more than likely tune in to watch the show. All this equals more ratings for Fox. To be honest, if you really like him, you should almost hope he gets voted off early. So far every year the people that got voted off early have done better afterwards then the winner. The only exceptions are Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. Now tell me, if America is solely in control of who goes home and who stays, then why does America's purchasing habits suggest otherwise? Why does America always buy more songs and more albums from the "losers"? And consistently too? It's not like this only happened once and it was a fluke. This happens year after year. Call me a conspiracy theorist, but how would we know if Fox really isn't doing what America is voting for. Heck, even out government doesn't do what America votes for......but that's a different issues all together. :)
