What Does A Sabbath Look Like?

Everyone has heard of the Lord's commandment to keep holy the sabbath and to set it aside as a day of rest. God knows us all so well (after all...He created us) that He knows that we need a day off. A day for rest and relaxation. So, what does that look like in this crazy, busy world we live in? Here's what our Sunday looked like this week.

I was up at 7am to get ready for our churches first annual "Outdoor Worship Experience" at Belmar Park. I had my devotion, showered, and dressed. The wife was already up and at-em before I even opened my eyes. We got the kids up, managed their breakfast adventures, got them ready, and combed their hair. We were at Belmar park at 9:30am (an hour earlier than the service) to help set up the Connection Team stuff, pray with the pastor, and pitch in wherever it was needed. At 10:30am, the service began. We got to sit down for the first time while listening to the sermon. After the worship experience, we participated in an after worship experience BBQ with the church. Since it was our lifegroup's turn to help tear down our mobile church, we started helping the tear down of the stage and worship band equipment. We finally got home at 1:30pm. Joi dropped me off at home because I needed to work. We had a major data-center move over the weekend and I needed to validate the move and that everything went smoothly. So, while I went through the test plan at home on my laptop, Joi took the kids to Sam's Club to pick up milk and fruit. When Joi got home, she and the boys started cleaning the house and doing laundry for the week. I finally finished testing the data center move by 3:30pm. When I was done, it was time to clean the snake cage and feed the snakes. Garrison and I scrubbed out the snake cage while Joi continued to do our laundry for the week. The boys held their snakes and then we fed all three of their snakes. Then we had to drive 30 minutes each way to Arvada to get rid of an old mattress that used to belong to Gavin. Arvada has a "junk pick-up day" and since Joi's sister lives in Arvada, we took advantage of an opportunity to get rid of that old mattress. When we got home, it was dinner time. We had plenty of left-overs, but we still had to heat up and prepare five different meals. After eating, she washed dishes while I dried them. Finally, sometime around 6pm, we sat down for the second time since the sermon at 11am. I was so exhausted, I fell asleep while watching the "A-Team" on Netflix with my boys. Joi continued to do laundry. I woke up when I heard her emptying the dishwasher and went to offer help. She kicked me out and told me to go rest, which was very nice of her. After that, we over-saw the showering of our boys, snack time, the brushing of teeth, and putting on of jammies. I read to the boys while Joi wrote in their journals. After sending them to bed, we brushed our own teeth, got into our night-clothes, and collapsed into bed. I don't believe we had any moments of refreshment or rest in that day except for my brief nap while watching "A-Team". Is this what a sabbath is supposed to be like? When do we fit a day of rest into our busy life? Can it really be done? Has anyone figured out a way to actually do this?

I can relate. This was my Sunday yesterday: Up at 6 am with my hair washed the previous evening. Get ready and leave the house for the 20 minute drive to church by 7 am. Unlock my office, get the batteries and sheet music ready for rehearsal. Prepare the stage and turn on the Media computer and projectors. sound check. Rehearsal. Pre-service Volunteer Prayer with Pastor Jay @ 8:30. Team talk before taking the stage and more prayer. 9 am service.... it last about 90 minutes. Worship is 30 minutes long. Go around the front of the building a prepare for the next service while other's are in the 9 am service. Service ends and we start everything again for the 11 am service. After 11am service, go count tithes from 1st and 2nd service. Re-check media. More team prayer. Now get ready for 1 pm service. Following worship portion of 1 am service... count the final tithes. Done by 3:20 pm. I get to sit down while I am driving or being driven to lunch. quick lunch and return for special guest speaker at 6 pm Generations service. Bring the cupcakes I baked for the BBQ and bake sale following the evening service. All this, every week, week after week for the last 3+ years... and all this followed Saturday where I had to sing at Women's ministry with sound check & rehearsal at 8:15 am until 12 noon, followed by a baby shower for a pastor's wife from 1 to 4 that was followed by a special event at the church where the Pastor is unveiling our new "look" and mission statement. went to staff presentation and stayed to sit with my team of volunteers for their presentation. Finally home by 7;30 pm. This may explain some of my stress but at least it keeps me active.
