I Believe in You, M. Night Shyamalan
I am a fan of M. Night Shyamalan. I've been a fan ever since I saw The Sixth Sense and it blew my mind. I enjoyed The Village, too...although I believe that it was marketed poorly. They kept calling it a horror/thriller, but I thought that it was more of a romance/intellectual mind bender. I think the reason it didn't do so well was that everyone was expecting a scary horror movie and I don't think it was meant to be that at all. I even thought Signs was entertaining...even though my sister-in-law makes fun of me for liking that movie. I still defend it to this day. I like the theme of regaining your faith. Okay, yeah, it was told in a aliens taking over the world type format...but I still like the overall theme. Unbreakable, Lady in the Water, and The Happening were entertaining, but weren't as enjoyable overall. Although, I still saw some good story telling and direction in those movies. It seems that since The Village in 2004, Mr. Shyamalan seems to be in somewhat of a career slump. His movies aren't doing as well as everyone hoped. I dragged my wife with me to see "The Last Airbender" because I still have hope for M. Night's career. Unfortunately, it was painful to watch. I haven't seen "The Devil" but I heard that it did better in relation to it's proceeds as opposed to the movie's budget. I hear he's got a couple others in the works. A new movie called "After Earth" is starring Will Smith and his son. Perhaps this will regain everyone's trust in the Shyamalan name. I hope so. I still like him. I have faith that he will do good things in his career. I like his directing style and the way he tells a story. The suspense. The cinematography. The way that he follows the Hitchcock rule of showing less and letting our imagination take over to make it more scary. He let's our imagination work alongside his movies to enhance the experience. I still think he's got some gems yet to come. I'm not giving up on him. I believe in you, M. Night Shyamalan!

We'll have to wait until Shyamalan is no longer so rich or so foolish as to be surrounded by yes men/women. The same thing happens to all of them-- they hit it big and with the money comes human parasites and the result is the film maker/leader/great man believing their own hype. I loved Unbreakable and the Sixth Sense, but thought the rest of the ones I saw were really weak. I'd love for him to go back to completing the promise of the early films.
